Welcome To The Kids Feel Safe Program

Our Mission

KidsFeelSafe.Org is a 501(c)(3) organization in Athens, Georgia, designed to create a network of safe spaces in our community where children can feel secure and supported when they are away from home. By fostering partnerships within the community, we aim to empower children and their families with the tools and resources they need to navigate emergencies and challenging situations confidently.

Introduction

The "Kids Feel Safe" program was introduced to the community by Dwain Segar of the Segar Jazz Affair. Inspired by the "Safe Haven for Kids" initiative establish in New York City, Dwain designed this program to ensure that elementary and middle school children always have a place to turn when they feel unsafe or are in need.

How The Program Works

Safe Spaces Identified by Yellow Stickers

Local businesses and organizations can participate by displaying a yellow sticker on their front doors or windows. This sticker signals to children that they can seek help inside.

Community Training

Participating businesses receive training to educate their staff on how to handle situations where a child seeks assistance. Employees are trained to:

Provide comfort and reassurance to the child.

Use emergency contact information provided by the child’s parents. Call 911 if the situation requires police intervention.

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness

Each child enrolled in the program will carry an emergency card filled out by their parents. The card includes important contact numbers and other relevant information to assist in emergencies.

Supportive Partnerships

Supportive Partnerships

The program works closely with local schools, law enforcement, and community leaders to spread awareness and ensure its effectiveness. Teachers play a vital role in educating students about how to recognize and use the program.
